Another South Indian Film Actor Is Taking Plunge Into Politics

The popular Telugu film star Chiranjeevi is the latest in a long list of film actors to be drawn to the dazzling world of politics. He will make his political baptism on his birth day August 2, though India's Independence Day on August 15 is also talked about as the suitable time for him to go public with his eight -month long plan to launch a political party.

Andhra Pradesh is by and large a two–party state with the Congress and the Telugu Desam started by thespian N T Rama Rao in 1983. The nucleus of Rao's party when it was launched was his Kamma community and his film fans but within in days he was able to reach out to all sections and came to power riding on the crust of his charisma. The NTR wave crushed the Congress then led by Indira Gandhi baffling political pundits.

Chiranjeevi's entry is seen as a threat to the Telugu Desam presently led by NTR's son-in-law Nara Chandrababu Nadu. Already several seniors and trusted colleagues of Naidu have resigned from the TDP and are waiting in the wings for a call from the new actor politician on the block. The Congress is also likely to suffer in the days ahead particularly when the dates for elections are announced, in the coastal districts which are dominated by Kapu community.

Chiranjeevi himself is a Kapu. And he hails from the coastal region.

He exudes confidence that he would repeat the NTR phenomenon. 'My party will sweep the next elections and come to power with an overwhelming majority', he told reporters in his first media interaction on his political plans. Hitherto his actor- brother Naga Babu and producer – brother-in-law Alu Aravind have been the public face of Chiranjeevi the politician in the making.

'I hope to win 225 of the 294 assembly seats and form my own government', Chiranjeevi told a questioner at his press conference in Hyderabad. He has not identified any particular constituency for himself. 'I can contest from any of the assembly seats across the state'.

As of now, Chiranjeevi is not fielding any questions on contentious issues that have bedevilled the TDP and the Congress. More particularly the demand for Telangana state comprising some nine backward but mineral rich districts around capital Hyderabad city. He is also keeping the counsel to himself on the oft heard demand for reservations to his Kapu community.

All he is willing to say for the present is that he would go by people's wishes. 'I will go in accordance with the aspirations and thinking of the people at large'.

Keeping the hopes alive of seniors from TDP and Congress knocking at his doors, the actor said a decision will be taken on case-by-case basis. "We will closely scrutinizing their past record".

Sources close to Chiranjeevi camp said that they have completed the preparations for the launch of the party by training cadres and holding district level brain storming sessions on local agenda. 'Our election campaign material is also ready', the sources said adding that they are ready to face the ballot box any time since the Manmohan Singh government is planning to advance the Lok Sabha election to December –January and the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections could be held simultaneously. These polls are due in May 2009.

What Can Chiranjeevi do to Andhra Pradesh

3 letters have started a new epoch in AP politics in 1983. It is needless to say that those letters are N T R. People praised to the skies that the era is going to be Rama Rajyam. Entire state was in mass hysteria. The screen god became the Chief Minister as a cake walk. But was there Rama Rajyam? If giving rice for Rs 2 a kilo can be termed as Rama Rajyam, yes that was Rama Rajyam. If giving a yellow shirt and green knickers for Rickshaw pullers were Rama Rajyam, yes, NTR's era was a Rama Rajyam. If announcing prohibition initially but later setting up Government Liquor Hubs with a great nomenclature 'Varuna Vahini' can be termed Rama Rajyam, yes that was Rama Rajyam. On a whole, it's the faith, following and mania those decide the righteousness of a person of leaders. N T R brought identity for Telugu and 'Telugu vari atmagouravam' in international scenario. That is true and holds no dispute. N T R brought that identity and confidence for 6 Cr-population. As a successor Chandrababu also brought identity for Andhra Pradesh as a hub for world standard software technology. One cannot raise finger in that aspect.

But no body is immune to vote bank politics. Be it NTR, Chandrababu, YSR -everybody is bending for vote bank politics. Indian political scenario is in such a miserable position that Rs 2 kilo rice is still a vote pulling mantra. Politicians are becoming millionaires, multi millionaires and reaching unbelievable height sin acquiring properties. But still they are pulling common man votes by throwing Rs 2 kilo rice. Which politician could become a statesman and change this scenario? People know only one thing. Chandrababu earned Rs 10,000 Cr in his political career. YSR earned a few thousand crores in his era. Jayalalitha is worth Rs 5000 Cr in Tamilnadu. Chidambaram is also worth Rs 2000 Cr as per grapevine. The funniest part is that many of Chowdharys are patting themselves saying Babu has Rs 10,000 Cr property and Reddy's are putting glowing faces saying YSR has Rs 20,000 Cr. What about the common man? He is still running for Rs 2 kilo rice. Where is development? Where is welfare? Elections have become a child's play in India.

Will Chiranjeevi change this scenario? Can he start a new epoch that stands impressive and inspiring? Can he become a real life Muta Mestri and Tagore for AP? Then his entry into politics would certainly make great sense.

Chiranjeevi's Party Lacks Politicos

Megastar Chiranjeevi is facing an acute shortage of politicians and intellectuals and his loyalists are quick to point out that this is one major reason for holding up the star from becoming a politician.

According to sources, Chiranjeevi wanted to have a full-fledged polit bureau in place before he goes public about his political party. However, the shortage in building a thinktank is delaying this, they point out. “No doubt, a team of advisers working hard to prepare the ground for the launch of the party with a bang. But, the entire operation lacks in political colour and hence looks uninspiring,” said the sources.

After deliberating on this shortfall, the megastar now wants to appoint some experienced politicianintellectuals to impart political structure to the ongoing efforts of his aides. And the appointment of bureaucrat-turned-politician K S R Murthy is the first step in that direction.

As of now, the activities are being looked after by apolitical intellectuals like Dr P Mitra, P Vinay (both medical doctors), T V Rao, T Brahma Reddy, YLN Rao (all top brass of Janavignana Vedika, an NGO wedded to spread scientific temper among the people). “These are mostly considered non-political people. Even though they have been working hard for quite some time in mobilising an opinion in favour of Chiranjeevi, many consider their efforts as missing in political direction,” the sources said.

Many consider the appointment of Murthy, former special chief secretary of Andhra Pradesh and former Congress MP from Amalapuram, also a dalit leader from the coastal area, as a strong message to the people of the state that the future party is not a caste-based one but a genuine democratic outfit.

According to the sources, Chiranjeevi will start his negotiations with political leaders in the second week of July when the Moodham, an inauspicious period in the calendar, passes off.

“We have persuaded him not to keep aloof from interacting with the senior leaders who want to associate with him and he agreed for that,” an aide to the star told media.

Big Confusion In Chiru's Camp

Even before the launch, the film star Chiranjeevi party seems to have caught in an ideological struggle with some leaders pushing pro-BJP agenda and some others moving towards the Left parties. Confusion reigns in the camp and they honchos are divided into groups and are exerting pressure on the film star.

Initially, Chiranjeevi thought about having an election alliance with the Left parties, but the parties’ (Left) inclination towards the Telugu Desam party forced the Chiru camp to look for an alternative. Former union minister, Mr P.Sivasankar’s son, and active leader in the film star camp Mr Vinay along with some Mahila Vaaradi leaders strongly supported the proposal to go with the BJP, while former CPM party leaders, who are actively working for the film star party, Dr Mitra, Dr Brahma Reddy and Vital are trying their best to have an alliance with CPM and CPI parties.

Sources informed that Mr Allu Aravind, brother in-law of Chiranjeevi and key player in the proposed party, was also in favour of tie-up with BJP to face the Congress onslaught. "Recent reports that Congress might use the Income- Tax department against the film star also forced a change in the thinking of core group, which has earlier thought of going independently. We will certainly befriend some parties in the run up for the elections" informed a senior leader.

Some of the leaders are hell bent and want the star’s yet to be formed party to contest on its own and should not take the help of any parties. With the change in the core group these leaders are moving out of the party. Once active member in the film star core group, Dr Kasu Prasada Reddy recently announced that he would not join the new party. The core group of the camp is busy giving final touches to the manifesto, major schemes of the party and relations with other parties.

Chiranjeevi expects 225 MLA seats on his own

The suspense over actor Chiranjeevi’s political entry seems to have come to an end. The actor announced on Tuesday at an informal gathering of a few select reporters that he will launch a political party soon.
"After August 15, the announcement will be made," the star said. Talking to a few mediapersons at his film production office in Jubilee Hills, Chiranjeevi was confident that his party will win 225 seats on its own in the General elections. He said that the media speculations about his political career since 1999 made him consider entering politics. He evaded questions on his party’s name, flag and agenda and said that he would meet the media very soon to reveal all that. He disclosed that there were around 20 names under consideration for his party.

Chiranjeevi indicated that he would announce the party through a media conference and there would a public meeting in Hyderabad and Tirupati after that. Though mediapersons questioned him about a separate Telangana, categorisation of SCs and Kapu reservations, the film star evaded a direct reply and said that he would go to people to know their thoughts. Responding to a question, the filmstar said he had not yet finalised from which constituency he would contest and added that he was ready to contest from any of the 294 segments in Andhra Pradesh.

Chiru’s Party Will Rise Above Caste, Religion, Region’

Megastar Chiranjeevi’s party will rise above considerations of caste, religion and region, said his brother and actor Nagendra Babu, speaking to fans from the districts at a meeting in Hyderabad ahead of the formation of the outfit.
Nagendra Babu exhorted all fans to become party workers and strive to achieve the goals of his brother, no matter the hardships involved. "If everyone thinks about his own convenience and does not bother about the problems of others, then how would social betterment come about?" he asked.
Nagendra Babu said Chiranjeevi was committed to giving the people a better administration. Nature abhorred vacuum, he noted, and said that if good people did not occupy it, then anti-social elements would surely rush in to take advantage.

Winning Scope For Chiranjeevi

More on the political arrival of Megastar Chiranjeevi and months before Chiru is to make his announcement on anything, many channels, newspapers and other forms of media did their own form of research and surveys to come out with an analytical view of the entire situation.

While the ruling party Congress has ruled out any disturbance due to the Chiru factor and instead they are expressing happiness that this would cause a split in the vote banks of their chief opposition party TDP, there seems to be an altogether new perspective that has actually come to light.

It is known that Chiru's agenda has been the unification and betterment of the BC sectors and since all the BC communities put together in the entire state, they form 58% of the state population. So even if a fair share of this community shows their support towards Chiru then the results will surely cause quite a disturbance for the Congress party. Apart from the BC factor, Chiru still enjoys a great appeal amongst his fans that are not particularly restricted to one caste.

Suhasini As Chiru Mahila

Suhasini Maniratnam, who ticked the memory line of the Telugu audiences with her presence in Bommarillu - a TV game show in the recent weeks, is going to head the women wing of Megastar Chiranjeevi's ready-for-launch party in August, sources said. At a time, when Congress party's women wing is additionally powered with Jeevita Rajasekhar, considered a good speaker, its rival TDP has Roja, with a peculiar tinge of audacity in her voice. We have to wait and see to what extent Suhasini could compete with the feminine political rhetoric.
